New Weapons System In The Works


Hello Everyone,

We have been working on a new weapon system for Autonomous Anarchy, and this week we are showing some of the progress we've made on implementing it into the game.

The Old System

The old weapon system had 4 weapons, which you could unlock and level up by finding power ups hidden throughout the levels. These weapons were fairly different from each other, but we felt like the level system wasn't really what we wanted. Some of the big issues we had with it was when you died, you would lose a level from all your powerups, which made it hard to recover. It was also hard to balance the rooms and bosses due to the different levels. Our new system fixes this leveling problem and adds much more variety and gameplay choice, which is hopefully more fun as well.

New Weapons

First of all, the new system adds 2 more weapons, a charge shot and a tracking shot, and also updates the old ones. Here is the list:

  • Orange - Rapid fire (shoots very fast)
  • Green - Spreadshot (shoots a spread of bullets)
  • Blue - Laser (shoots an accurate burst of lasers)
  • Pink - Missile (shoots an exploding missile for area damage)
  • Yellow (NEW) - Charge (rapid fires low damage shots or can be charged to fire a piercing shot) 
  • Purple (NEW) - Tracker (shoots tracking bullets)

Weapon Combos

In addition to the new weapons, you can now combine 2 weapons together to create a brand new weapon, with over 20 different combinations. Our video shows off 5 of the new ones, and there are still a few that are in the works. Combining usually gives a weapon with the qualities of both base weapons. For example, if you combine the spreadshot with the missile, you get a shotgun spray of exploding bullets. We will also have unique graphics for most of these new weapons, but they aren't finished yet so they didn't make it into the video.

Other Changes

Since you no longer have weapon levels to lose, you will now be reverted to your base powerup upon death. The base powerups are the single weapons with no combo. We are thinking of adding an option at the start of the game which lets you choose which weapon is your base weapon, but can't be changed from then on. Either way, it will be much easier to recover from death, as your attack power can be recovered much faster.

Since we have removed levels from the weapons, collecting weapon power ups is now more about finding a combo that works for you than getting your levels up to deal with enemies. This should make the game more interesting, and hopefully means there are more ways to play.
